A gifted young outsider discovers how to turn charisma into devotion, songs into public opinion, and fame into power. As he rises towards the throne, his longing for love becomes entangled with his need to control how others see him.
Inspired by the biblical King David, DAVID is a bold pop-rock musical about desire, political ambition and the human cost of shaping the truth.
First produced in Israel in 1992, the musical developed a devoted cult following. A new version is now in development for audiences in Israel and internationally.

The conceptual images on this page are based on actual photographs from past productions of DAVID, reimagined to reflect the creator’s vision for a large-scale production. For illustrative purposes only.

THE STORY

David vs. Goliath | An American Idol-style musical showdown at the Valley of Elah stadium.

Rejected by his family, David is a gifted young shepherd whose irresistible charm conceals a desperate hunger for love and recognition. When his victory over Goliath makes him an overnight sensation, he discovers that songs and stories can shape what people believe - and who they follow.

At King Saul’s court, David gives everyone what they long to see: a loyal servant, a captivating lover, a future king. He wins Michal’s devotion and Jonathan’s love, while Saul recognises the threat behind his apparent innocence. Forced into exile, David gathers society’s outcasts around him, with his fiercely loyal friend Joab at his side. Together, they turn a refuge in the wilderness into the beginning of a kingdom.

Once crowned, David transforms his reign into a spectacle of music, faith and public adoration. But Bathsheba understands the desires that drive him - and knows how to use them. Their affair leads to a ruthless cover-up and the death of her husband, Uriah. Confronted by the prophet Nathan, David finally admits his guilt.

As violence tears his family apart, David loses his grip on the story he has created. Joab’s loyalty reaches its breaking point, while Bathsheba and Nathan turn David’s own methods against him to secure the throne for her son, Solomon.

The songs endure. The legend survives. But the man who taught a nation what to believe loses the one thing he always wanted: love that needs no illusion.

THE MUSIC

Listen to selected songs from DAVID, translated into English by several translators to explore how the musical might sound for an English-speaking audience.
The English demo recordings were produced by Michael Einav, with the generous participation of fellow singers who volunteered their voices. They offer a glimpse of the score’s international potential, rather than a final English-language version of the musical.

“Saul Has Slain His Thousands, and David His Tens of Thousands” | Joab and the people celebrate David’s meteoric rise at King Saul’s court.

Long before mass media, David understands the power of an unforgettable public moment. A victory becomes a legend. A song shifts a nation’s loyalty. A lament shapes how the dead will be remembered. His gift is knowing what people long to believe, and becoming the person who makes that belief possible.

With pop-rock energy, irreverent humour and sensuality, DAVID explores the uneasy relationship between the man, his public image and the people drawn to him. Jonathan’s love, Joab’s loyalty and Bathsheba’s ambition expose different sides of a ruler who can read almost anyone, yet struggles to face himself. Beneath his charisma lies an old wound: a rejected boy’s hunger for recognition. As admiration grows, so does his dependence on it. Winning love and maintaining power become dangerously intertwined.

Why David now? Because the distance between visibility and authority has become frighteningly small. Public life rewards those who command attention, stir emotion and offer a compelling version of reality. David’s rise reveals how readily we invest a magnetic figure with our hopes, and how difficult it becomes to acknowledge his wrongdoing once his story has become part of our own identity.

The musical also asks what happens to love under those conditions. Can intimacy survive when every relationship serves a public image? When does loyalty become complicity? Joab’s devotion ultimately forces him to choose between protecting David and confronting him, while Bathsheba learns to wield the same methods that secured David’s throne.

As the stories that brought him to power become weapons in other hands, the biblical epic unfolds as an intimate political and psychological drama. DAVID invites us to feel the attraction of its hero, then examine what we have been willing to forgive. His capacity to admit guilt offers a fragile possibility of change. Whether he can live by that admission is another question.

Nathan’s Parable | At David’s palace, the prophet Nathan tells the king the parable of the poor man’s lamb.

FROM TEL AVIV TO NEW YORK

DAVID premiered in Tel Aviv in 1992, performed by a young company whose energy, talent and daring helped turn an original musical into a cult phenomenon. Audiences returned again and again, learned the songs by heart and took the soundtrack home. Over four seasons, thousands of young people grew up with DAVID, forming a passionate following that extended far beyond the theatre. Several members of the original company went on to become prominent figures in Israeli entertainment.

For many of those fans, DAVID remains part of their personal history. More than three decades later, they still seek out the recordings, share memories and hope to see it return. In 2023, a reunion and screening brought the original company and its audience together again. The response led to three further sold-out evenings, revealing how deeply the musical had stayed with the generation that first embraced it.

The work itself continued to evolve. A workshop at Beit Zvi in 2002 was followed by a full production in 2003, exploring the story with a new cast and developing its dramatic and musical scope.

Its international journey grew through the efforts of original company member Noa Tishby and other collaborators who believed in its potential beyond Israel. English-language demos and further development led to presentations for prospective producers and investors. In December 2010, an English-language performance of “Saul Has Slain His Thousands” at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall brought the musical’s exuberant energy to an American audience.

Today, a new version builds on that history while taking a sharper look at David himself: the artist, the idol and the ruler whose hunger for love becomes a struggle for power.

DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCTION ENQUIRIES

The Ark Comes to Jerusalem | David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, dancing before it wearing only a linen ephod.

An updated Hebrew script is available, alongside a substantial body of songs written throughout the musical’s development and selected English-language demos.
The next phase offers an opportunity to refine the dialogue and shape the final selection of songs for a new production.

Yaron Kafkafi is seeking a producer or investor to join him in shaping DAVID for international audiences. The ambition is to develop a stage production, with the possibility of also exploring a feature film adaptation.
